SPECIALIZED BUILDING ENTRY COURSE

Lock Picking And Subtle Mechanical
Breaching Skills

COURSE OBJECTIVE:  Introduce course participants to the various specialized building entry options and the information needed to safely and effectively carry out such an entry.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This is a basic course intended for field operators at all levels.

Patrol officers, investigators, probation and parole officers, narcotic officers, and tactical teams are often faced with the task of entering a building to serve search and arrest warrants (including “sneak and peek” warrants), to carry out hostage rescues, or to conduct welfare checks on elderly persons or the reported victims of violence.  Military special operations personnel must often quietly enter structures prior to, or during, the execution of mission objectives to secrete personnel in hostile environments, to establish surveillance, or to position cover personnel.  This course will introduce students to basic lock picking skills, as well as a variety of stealth bypass techniques used for defeating locks that afford breaching options beyond the conventional forced entry.  In addition, important intelligence gathering and pre-planning issues will be discussed that will facilitate a safe approach, entry, and mission conclusion.  Each student will receive a syllabus which highlights the information presented in the training as well as a CD containing a variety of articles and reference material regarding the subject.  All tools and equipment needed for the course will be provided.  Students will have the opportunity to pick over 190 training locks during the class which represent a cross section of the type of locks commonly encountered in the field.

Each student will receive their own basic pick set upon completion of the course.

TUITION:   $495.00 (U.S.)

PRESENTATION FORMAT:  The Specialized Building Entry Course is two days (16 hours) long.

Day One

During the first day of training the topics include:
• ethics issues surrounding keyless entries
• intelligence gathering and mission planning
•lock familiarization and operation
• introduction to lock picking, tools, and techniques
• lock picking – practical, hands-on experience picking a variety of locks (190+) including knobs, dead bolts, padlocks, and specialty locks
• techniques for defeating common padlocks including the warded type, the four- number combination lock, and the 3-number circular combination lock.
homework - students going home for the night are assigned to take their pick tools with them and attempt to open the locks on their residence

Day Two

The second day of training begins with an opportunity to ask questions which may have come up after the first day of training.  That is followed by:

an explanation and demonstration of the various bypass techniques used to defeat residential and commercial lock systems
• additional lock picking application
• exposure to a number of specialized techniques used to defeat high-security padlocks, attaché cases, and similar mechanisms

After lunch students are configured into small groups for what is known as “the final exam.”  Each group is tasked with carrying out a variety of entries similar to those encountered in the field.  The scenarios are intended to reinforce skills already learned as well as expose students to enhanced components of those skills.  Students are required to formulate an entry plan using the skills learned then successfully conduct the entry.  The scenarios not only require a preliminary lock bypass similar to entering a structure or storage container, but secondary entries into fire safes, filing cabinets, attach’e cases, and desk drawers.  Students are expected to assess the type of lock(s) to be encountered during the entry, determine the different methods available to bypass the lock or locks, then carry out the selected technique.

The course concludes with a debriefing, presentation of certificates, and the awarding of individual pick sets.
